Does Your Website Still Matter If AI Answers the Question?

Yes. AI answers are built from sources, and your website is the one source you control. Google says its AI features follow the same SEO basics as regular search and link to supporting websites. If your site doesn't explain what you do and where, the AI quotes someone else.

    What Google says

    • AI Overviews and AI Mode "surface relevant links to help people find the information they're looking for."
    • To appear, Google says to apply "the same foundational SEO best practices" as for Search overall.
    • Traffic from AI features is counted in Search Console's Performance report under the "Web" search type.

What your website does that a profile can't

    • Explains each service in depth: what's included, how long it takes, what affects the price.
    • Answers the specific questions people ask before they call.
    • Shows proof: licenses, project photos, reviews in context.
    • Gives AI something specific to cite instead of a generic directory blurb.

    What to make sure of

    • Search engines can crawl it. Google lists allowing crawling in robots.txt, and by any CDN or hosting infrastructure.
    • Important content is in text, not only in images or PDFs.
    • Your name, address and phone match your Google profile.
    • Pages link to each other so every service page can be found.

What we saw in one local test

In a September 28, 2026 test of a Vancouver, WA dog groomer we manage (nine searches, run twice), the business's own website was cited as a source in none of the AI Overviews that mentioned it. The mentions came from its Google Business Profile and third-party sites. That doesn't make the website unimportant. It means AI answers about local businesses lean on profile and directory data, so the website's job is to match that data and answer questions clearly. This is a small test on one business and should not be read as a rule.

    The takeaway

Your site backs up your profile. Match it, answer the real questions, and make it readable as text.

    Common questions

Can I skip the website and just use my Google profile?

You can show up on Maps without one, but you'll have far less for AI assistants to quote and far less to convince a customer.

How many pages do I need?

Enough to cover each main service and the area you serve. Quality matters more than count.
