Your Google Business Profile Isn't Showing Up? Check These Five Things, in This Order

When a business doesn't show up on Google, the cause usually falls into one of five buckets. They all look the same from the outside, so checking them in order beats guessing.

Start by asking which problem you have

Search your exact business name. If nothing comes up even then, you have an eligibility problem: verification, a suspension or a duplicate. If your name works but your service search doesn't, you have a visibility problem, which is a different and narrower fix.

    The five checks, in order

    1. Is the profile verified? A profile that was never verified, or stalled partway through, generally won't appear in Search or Maps. It is the most common cause, so rule it out first.
    2. Is it suspended? A suspension notice usually shows in the profile dashboard. Look there before assuming anything else.
    3. Is there a duplicate? A second, unclaimed listing for the same business can split visibility or confuse which one Google treats as the real one.
    4. Do your category and service area match what you actually do? A vague primary category such as "Contractor" will not win a search for roof repair. Google matches searches to categories first.
    5. Is it only one search, not all of them? Showing up for your name but not your service means Google can find you but isn't sure you are the best nearby match.

Showing up is not the same as ranking

Not appearing at all usually points to eligibility: verification, suspension or a duplicate. Those have to be fixed before ranking is even a question. Ranking low means Google knows the profile and doesn't yet see it as the strongest match.

If you show up for your name but not your service

    • A primary category that doesn't match the search.
    • A thin profile: missing services, hours, photos or description.
    • Listings elsewhere that disagree on name, address or phone.
    • A website that never mentions the service or the city.
    • Distance: Google weighs how close you are to the searcher, and you can widen your area but not remove distance.

To check it yourself, search your main service plus your city from a phone, then again from a few miles away. The businesses that keep appearing are the ones Google is most sure about. Compare their categories, review count and website to yours.

    The takeaway

Fix eligibility first: verified, not suspended, no duplicate. Only then work on category, completeness and consistency.

    Common questions

    Did Google penalize my business?

Rarely. A real suspension shows a notice in your dashboard. Most invisible businesses aren't penalized, they are outmatched.

Will Google Ads help me show up in the free results?

No. Ads and the free map results are separate systems.

Why does my business show on Maps for me but not for customers?

Google personalizes results by location and search history. From your office you are closest to yourself. Customers a few miles away see a different map.

Can a bad review remove me from Google Maps?

No. Reviews affect ranking and clicks, not whether the listing exists.
